My Most Vivid Memory

My most vivid memory of the Center is the bike ride up the hill first thing in the morning in the early spring, when the miners’ lettuce was in bloom and the fields were green and fragrant with the morning dew. I would always feel a sense of accomplishment at having made it up the hill yet one more time, parking my bike outside my study. As I opened the door, unless it was unusually foggy, I relished the incredible view over (the usually dry) Lake Lagunita and the red-roofed Stanford campus to the Bay and the hills on the other side. Sometimes, on my little terrace outside, there would be an animal — perhaps a bob-cat or chipmunk or blue jay; but usually there was only the quiet and the familiar smells of California vegetation. I would sit down at my desk, still looking at the view, and gradually shift into work mode, grateful every morning that I had this day ahead of me to read, reflect and write. It was a precious moment, and I shall always treasure these memories.
